You got to see what happens next…” videos, or crush candies and kill medieval monsters? The problem with digital content, however, is that it doesn’t feel like work. Beyond that, our craniums will metaphorically hit the wall or go bonk. The physical limits to our brain energy – and hence attention spans – means that we can only process this much of information on any given day. Our minds and bodies go into an undirected autonomous mode, and we become mindless zombies – unresponsive, unfeeling and unthinking. ![]() When this happens, we minimize the time and energy spent in processing information. The default action is to conserve our energies. Given the limited capacities of our human “mental batteries”, the brain shuts down when faced with overwhelming information. This is also why students are mentally and physically exhausted at the end of a long school day, even though they are mostly just sitting down, listening and copying notes. In a related fashion, paying attention literally means investing our limited “energy currency” in a concentrated and focused manner.
